How To Clean Your Fridge

Deep Cleaning Your Fridge And Other Spring Cleaning Ideas During Coronavirus

By now (if you’re anything like me) you have Lysol-ed and Clorox-ed your door knobs, light switches, iPhones, computer keyboards and countertops a gazillion times.  It gets me thinking about all the other places where those Corona cooties might be hiding. What a great time to do some serious spring cleaning like never before! Your refrigerator might be the place to start, after bringing home groceries which may have had germs lingering on packaging.

Cleaning Your Fridge

The CDC has a great PDF with 5 steps to clean your fridge. It was intended to help if you have brought home recalled food, but it works great to help pro-actively sanitize in these times.

CDC Guidelines on How To Clean Your Fridge

STEP 1: Clear out the items in your fridge.  Don’t let them sit out for more than 2 hours. Use hot, soapy water to clean the packaging of the food and drinks. Return the items to a new, clean surface.

STEP 2: Remove shelving, drawers and any removable parts from the fridge. Beware: don’t run cold glass shelves in hot water or they can crack. Let them come to room temperature first. Wash shelves and parts with hot, soapy water and dry with a clean towel.

STEP 3: Wipe inside of fridge with hot, soapy water. Make sure to get in all the nooks and crannies.

STEP 4: Mix a solution of 1 TBSP bleach with 1 gallon of water.  Add this to a spray bottle and spray to clean further.

STEP 5: Return the shelving and clean food to your clean fridge! Make sure to clean the counter where the dirty items were touching and also to wash any towels used for cleaning.

More Spring Clean Ideas:

Kick Plate + Condenser

You need to clean behind the kick plate at the bottom of the fridge from dust and dirt.  Call me a bad housekeeper, but I think I was 30 years old before I realized you needed to do this. Cleaning the condenser coils so your refrigerator runs more efficiently is important.  Remove the kick plate; take a small brush and also the hose attachment on your vacuum to clean. This will help save on expensive service calls and extend the life of your fridge.

If you have additional under counter refrigeration, make sure to clean them as well. We love how Perlick refrigerators have an easy clean stainless steel interior. It is the best material for a fridge, and is one surface that viruses don’t last as long. It’s also important to clean behind the kick plate on your undercounter units as well.

Replace Your Water Filters

It’s also a great time to replace your refrigerator water filter. Most people forget and never change the thing. Or, better yet, order a bypass plug for the filter and instead plumb your Body Glove filter to your fridge. Then, you will have superior quality ice and water from the convenience of your fridge.
